8 Reasons Why Everett Washington Should Be Your Next Getaway

It’s a classic northwest town, backed by vistas of snow-capped mountains to the east and west, criss-crossed by a legendary river and miles of Puget Sound shoreline. There are hiking trails, bike paths, cafes and breweries.

But Everett, Washington also has its own unique charm that makes it a Northwest city like no other. Think: a vibrant arts scene and parks around every corner, exciting professional sports teams and an aerospace connection that’s simply unmatched. It’s a gateway to the North Cascades that combines the amenities of big-city Seattle with its small-town character.

Located just 25 miles north of Seattle – and just over three hours off the I-5 freeway from Portland – Everett is a one-of-a-kind weekend getaway. Here are eight reasons.

1. Two miles of sandy beach in Puget Sound. Thanks to the unique location and shallow water surrounding the man-made island of the pier, stretches of sand abound near Everett. Take the ferry or paddle to the island and settle in for a day of wildlife viewing, kitesurfing or just plain sailing.

2. A wide variety of typical Northwest hikes. Thanks to a stroke of lucky geology, Everett is within striking distance of an array of diverse hikes. Less than an hour from town, Wallace Falls is a classic wooded hike that leads to a scenic waterfall. A solid hike up Mount Pilchuck offers stunning views of the main waterfalls and the Olympics. If you’re looking for a less ambitious hike, visit the pretty Lord Hill Regional Park Nature Reserve, which welcomes walkers, horseback riders and mountain bikers.

3. Easy access to the arts. Everett has carved out a place as one of the most artistic towns in the Northwest. With a fantastic public arts program, one percent of eligible city capital improvement funds are dedicated to commissioning, purchasing and installing artwork. As you walk through the city center, you will see many sculptures and vibrant street art. Stop by the Schack Art Center (free entry) to watch glass blowing in action, or have a drink while viewing artwork at the Black Lab Art Gallery. Check out some theater (Village Theatre) or improv (Everett Improv) if you’re looking for a cultural night out.

4. You can attend a professional game. Seattle’s professional sports teams aren’t the only ones in these areas. The Everett AquaSox, a minor league baseball team, play at Everett Memorial Stadium from April to September, while the Everett Silvertips hockey team, part of the Western Hockey League, take to the ice at Angels of the Winds Arena from early October through April.

5. A long list of unique festivals and events every year. If you like to anchor your vacation around an event or immerse yourself in niche interests, check out the festivals Everett has to offer. The famous Sorticulture, which takes place over three days from June 10, 2022, is the place to be for local plants and flowers, outdoor products and garden art. The Fisherman’s Village Music Festival brings 40 bands to Everett from May 19-21, and Fresh Paint, where artists paint in their booths and sell their fresh-off-the-press artwork, begins August 20, 2022. New in Everett this year is the Everett 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament where downtown Everett will be transformed with hundreds of basketball courts on July 9-10. Add to that the city’s 4th of July celebration and there really is something for everyone.

6. Great city on foot. You don’t need to leave Everett for stellar hikes and walks – the city is home to beautiful walks that show off all that Everett has to offer. Hike along the Snohomish River in the Lowell neighborhood, look for waterfowl and raptors on the two loop hikes at Langus Riverfront Park, take Fido to the off-leash area and trails at Japanese Gulch, or take a leisurely stroll in the 11 themed gardens of Evergreen Arboretum & Gardens.

7. Seafood, coffee, craft beers. We would never recommend a coastal Northwest city that doesn’t excel in these food and drink mainstays. Everett ticked those boxes and more. Try seafood at Anthony’s Homeport, fine American cuisine at Emory’s on Silver Lake or tasty tacos at La Palmera Family Mexican. Scuttlebutt Brewing Co. may be the most popular in town, but there’s also At Large Brewing, Crucible Brewing Company, and many other tap rooms and bottle shops. And when you’re just starting your day, it’s hard to beat The Loft Coffee Bar, CafeMakario or Narrative Coffee.

8. Bring the whole family. If the other 7 reasons listed here haven’t convinced you that this city is great for everyone, here’s a little more to make your point. Boeing Future of Flight is a must-have for anyone interested in aviation or manufacturing. You will pass through the largest building in the world by volume and see the great birds as they are built. Pop culture’s leading lifestyle brand Funko has its flagship store in Everett, and the Imagine Children’s Museum is an amazing experience for kids.
