Cycle News Team | December 9, 2021

When it comes to KTM’s Factory Edition models, things have been calm in recent years, but that has changed completely with the introduction of the all-new 2022 250 and 450 SX-F Factory Edition models. These are completely new bikes, from the footpegs to the front fender. While they still receive the usual Factory Edition updates over the standard models, such as the factory racing CNC machined triple clamps, factory DID wheels, and orange highlights, the models 2022 FE comes with an all-new frame and engine, and a significantly redesigned body. Almost nothing is taken from the previous model.

The 2022 KTM 450 SX-F Factory Edition

The 2022 Factory Editions have been in the works for some time. The 450 was first tested by Cooper Webb and Marvin Musquin in 2019 and has been in development since.

Highlights include a new engine that is tilted two degrees rearward to improve mass centralization. Tilting the engine also lowers the countershaft sprocket by 3mm into the frame, which helps combat rear suspension squatting during hard acceleration. The SOHC cylinder head of the 450 is also redesigned to be more compact.

The 250 is brand new too.

The 450 is now equipped with a Quick shift function which can be turned on or off via an updated map switch on the handlebars. When activated, the ignition is interrupted for a fraction of a second to allow upshifting without the use of the clutch lever while the throttle is fully open. A sensor on the shift drum detects the force on the shift lever, sends the signal to the ECU, and the ignition timing is interrupted. To avoid unintentional gear changes and false neutrals, the function is only active from second to fifth gear.

There is a new quick change option on the Factory Edition.

The hydroformed chrome molybdenum frame is all new and emphasizes improving energy transfer through the frame, increasing rider comfort. One of the ways KTM has done this has been to redesign the way the upper shock absorber is mounted to the frame. The geometry is unchanged. The suspension features updated 48mm WP XACT forks and shocks, which are now lighter and shorter in overall length while maintaining the same wheel travel.

The 250 received many of the same changes as the 450, including the tilt of its DOHC engine, which was tuned for more power at mid-range. The 250 has received many updates specific to this bike.

Only 400 units of each model will be offered and only in the United States

KTM’s official press release is below.

The KTM FACTORY EDITION models have set performance and technological benchmarks in the hotly contested arena of motocross and supercross competition since 2012, when the first KTM 450 SX-F FACTORY EDITION was proudly presented as of “Dungey Replica”. While both 2022 FACTORY EDITION machines benefit from a list of updates and refinements specific to the 250 cc and 450 cc engines, they share the same competitive advantage offered by the all-new chassis, including a new swingarm, a new subframe and a new frame. With mass centralization and flex optimization as key goals, KTM engineers redesigned these crucial components to produce a new one-piece swingarm with optimized topology and flex, a new aluminum-polyamide hybrid subframe offering advanced durability and stiffness, and an inspired frame design with new shock-absorbing backing that dramatically improves feel and comfort. And, of course, true to the FACTORY EDITION aesthetic, the frame is powder coated in glossy orange and comes standard with frame guards and a skid plate.

Taking electronics to the next level and joining traction control, two selectable maps and launch control, is the latest technological marvel designed by KTM engineers, the Quickshifter feature that allows clutchless switching from second to second. fifth gear. This is turned on or off using the QS button on the all-new switch which intelligently combines functions for easy on-the-fly use.

Attracting attention is the new bodywork with an improved rider triangle for better knee contact, especially when standing, to inspire confidence for any level of rider. The addition of contact surfaces on the body greatly facilitates movement of the bike on the track and improves overall handling and agility. The flat saddle profile, combined with the race proven Selle Dalla Valle saddle cover, adapts perfectly to KTM’s READY TO RACE approach and gives riders exceptional control in all conditions. The graphics on the all-new KTM SX-F FACTORY EDITION models are closely inspired by the Red Bull KTM Factory racing bikes that will be used throughout the 2022 season. As always on a KTM FACTORY EDITION, premium racing-derived components come standard to ensure you’re ready for any level of competition right out of the box. Manufactured from high quality aluminum, the CNC machined Factory Racing clamps feature optimum steering stem stiffness, perfect alignment of the fork tubes and precise fork clamp geometry to ensure very high fork action. responsive and fluid. Maximum handling gains are obtained by simply adjusting the offset of 20 mm or 22 mm. DID Dirt Star’s high-strength black alloy rims with laser-etched logos are mated to CNC-machined orange hubs, using lightweight black spokes and orange anodized aluminum nipples. The factory wheels are paired with Dunlop GEOMAX MX33 motocross tires, developed in top level AMA Supercross and Motocross, for improved handling, cornering and traction.
