How to Create a Brochure or Flyer in Google Docs

You don’t need to hire an advertising agency to design a few brochures for your latest campaign. Google Docs is free and accessible, with easy ways to create a great brochure yourself.

Google Docs might not have many brochure templates, but customizing a template to suit your needs is easy. You can also create a trifold brochure yourself or use a third-party template to make it even easier. Let’s start.

How to make a brochure on Google Docs

  1. Open Google Docs on your web browser by going to Of course, you must be logged into your Google account for this to work.
  1. You can already see some common patterns at the top, but select the Template Gallery option to see them all at once.
  1. There are many different types of templates in the gallery – scroll down until you see a few options for brochures.
  1. Selecting the template opens a new document with the formatting already in place and filled with dummy text.
  1. Now just replace the text with your own content and add images with your brand logos.

This results in a pretty decent brochure with proper margins and a nice layout. You can start printing them if you are satisfied or customize them further.

Customizing Your Brochure Template in Google Docs

You can easily edit a template to add whatever written or visual content you want, but what about the formatting of the page itself? It’s easy too.

Open any brochure template and select Case > Layout. Here you can customize all aspects of your brochure layout.


Page orientation is set to Portrait default, which is great for simple brochures. However, to create a tri-fold brochure, you need the horizontal layout of the Countryside orientation.


The existing margins leave enough space on all sides, but you can always adapt them to your personal needs. It’s generally not a good idea to remove the margins entirely unless your layout already leaves enough blank space around the edges.

By clicking on the drop-down menu below page size displays a list of page sizes. Each entry has a name and dimensions in inches. Letter is usually the right option, but feel free to choose any other size from the list.

Page color

Google Docs brochure templates have a white background, but that doesn’t mean you have to stick with it. Promotional material can benefit from some background colorand brochures are no exception.

How to Create a Trifold Brochure in Google Docs

The Google Docs template gallery is great for multi-page business brochures, but you won’t find any templates for the much more common trifold brochure. Instead, you can create one yourself with a simple adjustment.

  1. First, open Layout from Case menu.
  1. Set orientation to Countryside. You will need the extra space to accommodate a trifold layout.
  1. You may also want to reduce the margins, especially on the Left and Right. With a brochure, our goal is to insert as much information as possible.
  1. Select OKAY to apply the changes to the current document.
  2. Now head to Format > Columns and select the three column option on the right.
  1. If you have content on the page, it will automatically be sorted into three columns. You can adjust margins between the columns with the little blue arrows, making sure you have enough room to bend.

Depending on your inserted images and overall design, you may want to play around with the page and column margins until they match well. Then just print the brochures and start folding.

You can also use the same process to create a bifold brochure. Simply choose the double column option in step five and adjust your margins accordingly.

Use of third-party templates

Google Docs templates can be pretty bland, and there’s not even that much to choose from. If you don’t have any interesting design ideas in mind, try starting with a third-party template.

  1. This model has only one size, but some may have several options. Confirm the desired size to continue.
  1. After waiting a few seconds, you will be redirected to Google Docs. If you are logged into your Google account on the web browser, you can now make a copy in Google Docs for your use.
  1. The template will open in a new document with all formatting in place. Simply replace the content and you are ready to start printing.
