New Marvel Distributor’s first week full of missing, damaged comics

Penguin Random House’s first Marvel Comics delivery results in damage and missing books at various retailers including DCBS.

The first deliveries distributed by Marvel Comics’ Penguin Random House are causing a stir among retailers.

According to Bleeding Cool, a shipment sent to Discount Comic Book Service – which distributes DC books through Lunar Distribution – has gone missing. “We are writing to let you know that the Marvel item shipment from Penguin Random House got lost on its way to us,” DCBS reported. “He is currently researching, but since we have not received any of our Marvel items for this week yet, we are unable to begin processing shipments. We sincerely apologize for the delay this causes and thank you for your patience.”

Other retailers who received their shipments reported improper packaging of the books. “We received our books today crammed into incredibly tiny boxes that had no protection from the rigors of shipping and literally 70% of our books were damaged,” one comic book store owner explained. “I can only imagine how things have gone across the industry. It seems these guys think they can ship comics like they ship their novels to bookstores and you’ll be fine. can only imagine how much money they will lose on the amount of damaged copies they will have to replace. “

“Oh no,” tweeted Ryan Higgins, owner of Comics Conspiracy. “Marvel Comics’ PRH packaging is bad. Really bad. Like, really, really bad.”

Marvel comics, like DC’s, were previously distributed by Diamond Comic Distributors. However, Diamond temporarily closed its doors during the COVID-19 pandemic, and DC took this opportunity to find a new distributor in Lunar, owned by DCBS. In March 2021, Marvel also changed its distribution plans, although it did not completely cut ties with Diamond.

“Today, Marvel announced a new arrangement for comics, crafts, and graphic novels going into the direct market,” Diamond’s Steve Geppi said at the time. “Beginning with the products on sale October 1, Diamond will purchase these Marvel products from Penguin Random House (PRH) as a wholesaler rather than distributing them directly from Marvel.”

Ironically, in April, Marvel released a video explaining how Penguin Random House’s new packaging would prevent damage to its comics.
