Hermansen, Gloria June
COTTAGE GROVE – Gloria June Hermansen, dear mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt and friend, passed away peacefully, with her family by her side, on Monday, October 11, 2021, at Agrace HospiceCare. She was 93 years old. She was born in Evanston, Illinois on December 11, 1927, to Fred and Ella Holmes.
Gloria grew up in Elmwood Park, Ill., And graduated from Proviso East High School in River Forest, Ill. She married Leroy Hermansen on February 28, 1953 and moved to Champaign-Urbana, Illinois, while Leroy attended the University of Illinois. Lee and Gloria raised their children, Barbara, David and John, in Addison, Illinois.
Gloria has been active in many fields throughout her life. She was an office manager in a dermatology practice for many years, and she regularly used her talents as a graphic designer in her volunteer work and in her church. Gloria spent many years volunteering at the Elmhurst Memorial Hospital in Elmhurst, Illinois where she did everything from graphic design to running the gift shop. She was an active member of the United Methodist Church in Batavia, Illinois, and later of the Bryn Mawr Presbyterian Church in Cottage Grove.
Years later, Gloria and Leroy lived in Wooddale and Batavia, Illinois, before moving to Cottage Grove, Wisconsin. It was there that she enjoyed a variety of music in many venues with her friend Karen, which included concerts from Madison Symphony at the Overture. Center. After moving to Cottage Grove, she seemed to find her “sweet spot” and some of the most loving and caring friends in her life.
Gloria loved spending time with her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren and loved them more than life. Even at 93, she was using Facebook as a way to communicate and view photos of all of her great-grandchildren.
Gloria loved classical music, especially piano and violin, and she was an accomplished pianist herself. She was a talented artist and shared her art with friends and family who will treasure it for many years to come. Gloria loved to play bridge and other games … but especially bridge. She always managed to find a group of people who shared the same passion for the game.
Gloria had a witty, dry sense of humor if you caught her at the right time. And everyone who knew her also knew her as someone who was always beautifully dressed. She always liked a good deal and later she discovered resale and had fun finding designer clothes at a great price.
Gloria was predeceased by her 64-year-old husband Leroy Hermansen; and son-in-law, David St. John. She is survived by her daughter, Barbara St. John; sons, David (Mary) Hermansen and John (Donna) Hermansen; grandchildren, Claire (Peter) Sonnentag, Stacy (Alex) Walker, Dan (Tawny) Hermansen and Mark Hermansen; great-grandchildren, Charlie Sonnentag, Laney Sonnentag, Arlo Walker, Sullivan Hermansen and Lucy Hermansen; sister, Karen Morgan; special friend, Karen Childs Baker and her husband, Preston Baker; and other relatives and friends.
