The property at the site of the former Boss Hoggs Smoke Shop is under new ownership
The former Boss Hoggs Smoke Shop has changed hands and customers will find a new look inside the new business, now called Prineville Quick Stop Smoke Shop and More.
Russell Weatherly purchased the property in July 2021, which had previously been owned by Bill Overall for over 30 years. Weatherly is the first owner since Overall sold the property.
“I bought it in July and we didn’t really close, but we were extremely limited. We just did a bunch of cleaning, painting, hauling and adding new stuff,” Weatherly told About the new store.
Weatherly has since brought in new shelves and cases, and it offers a wide variety of tobacco, including vapers, cigars, cigarettes, and chewing tobacco. Plus, they have fountain drinks, coffee, candy, snacks, candles, and gloves. He indicated that they also have lottery games coming up.
Since the tobacco is behind the counter, the store is not limited to customers 18 and over. Weatherly pointed out that the previous owner did not allow anyone under the age of 21 in the store because the tobacco was on the floor where customers could access it. There is also a cigar humidor.
“Everything is untouchable by the kids and behind the counter,” Weatherly noted.
Weatherly owned three other businesses in Prineville before purchasing the Smoke Shop. He owned Towne Pump and Pantry for seven years, Prineville Sinclair (previously 76) for eleven years, and he also had a local bowling partnership.
As for his incentive to buy the property, Weatherly replied, “I like challenges. I have always liked challenges. The other (companies) had gas where it doesn’t, and gas is a different game.
“It has been a smoking room for a long time,” he added.
Weatherly said the company has doubled its sales volume since opening.
“We try to take care of our customers.”
Weatherly has two employees, both of whom have also worked for him in the past. Mike Pinkston and Brandon Terramin worked for Weatherly nine years and four years, respectively. Pinkston said the two employees switch shifts so that one person doesn’t have to work late at night. Weatherly said the two employees worked out the arrangement themselves.
“We all work well together,” Pinkston said.
“He’s a great guy to work for,” Terramin added, referring to Weatherly.
Weatherly added that its beer offerings (sold by checkout) are competitively priced. They also offer cookies and gravy dishes and coffee in the morning.
He said the state took a substantial share of tobacco sales. Currently, the tax for a pack of 20 cigarettes is $ 3.33 and $ 4.1625 for a pack of 25.
