PENDING TRADE # 3: Week of September 22, 2021

Graphic novels. Collective editions. Omnibus. Trades. These are really just words for “awesome way to read comics”. So with this column, we’re going to take a look at all of those hardcover pages hitting comic book stores, bookstores, and online outlets this week! (Note that in some cases the release dates at comic book stores, online retailers, and bookstores are different)

The editor says: Iyanu, an orphaned teenager with no memory of her past, suddenly discovers that she has abilities that rival the ancient deities recounted in the folklore of her people. It is these abilities that are the key to bringing back an “Age of Wonders” as Iyanu begins his journey to save a world on the brink of destruction! Cursed Corrupt Fauna and strange divine beasts are determined to destroy humanity, unless Iyanu can stop them.

Dark Horse and YouNeek Studios are launching a common universe of fantasy stories and African superheroes: the YouNeek YouNivere!

Extraordinary stories about extraordinary characters inspired by African history, culture and mythology.

What I am saying: Roye Okupe and Godwin Akpan offer readers a fantastic adventure not to be missed! This blanket absolutely sucked me in with that bow and mean looking porter… and a fat kitten in the background.

The editor says: Three ordinary weirdos, a recurring dream. The acclaimed minds behind The Three Rooms in Valerie’s Head return with a whimsical and ambitious portrayal of human connection in the age of digital fragmentation.

You meet the strangest people on the internet.

Gideon is a lonely computer developer obsessed with a comic book from his childhood called Revenge of the Ghoulors, and secretly in love with his colleague Lisa. Heidi works at home in her pajamas, makes a lot of soup and wants to have time with her friends. Peter is a 56-year-old divorcee who delivers classic cars, has a built-in toaster and thinks a lot about the past.

These three people don’t seem to be related, but they do share something – they each have the same recurring dream. And when a new web service is introduced to help people share their dreams, what will happen when the three of them discover each other? What exactly connects these three lonely souls?

Skillfully weaving several storylines (including snippets from Gideon’s comic book Revenge of the Ghoulors), Dan Berry and David Gaffney present Rivers: an original examination of how events of the past can bind people together forever, and a surprising meeting between people who ‘ve never met.

What I am saying: Now, that… that sounds unique, and I’m a fan of unique. I want to know more about these weird individuals, and god knows the folks at Top Shelf are used to producing absolutely stellar OGNs.

The editor says: From New York Times bestselling author Carmen Maria Machado (Her Body And Other Parties, In The Dream House) comes a story so gruesome you won’t dare forget!

There is something in the woods …

Shudder-to-Think, Pennsylvania, has been on fire for years. The woods are full of rabbits with human eyes, a female deer stalking hungry girls, and bands of skinless men. What about the people of Shdder-to-Think? Well, they’re not doing so well either.

When El and Octavia wake up in a movie theater with no memory of the last hours of their lives, the two teenagers embark on a horrific journey to uncover the truth about the strange town they call home.

From critically acclaimed writer Carmen Maria Machado (Her Body and Other Parties) comes The Low, Low Woods, from the best-selling Hill House Comics library line. Featuring stunning illustrations of Dani (Lucifer), this volume brings together The Low, Low Woods # 1-6.

What I am saying: I’m scared and I haven’t even seen more than the cover.

The editor says: A new Daredevil rises to protect Hell’s Kitchen! Matt Murdock is in jail – but while serving his sentence in his masked guise, his home is left without a devil guardian. That is, until Elektra Natchios takes charge of protecting the Murdock neighborhood – and its legacy! But the new Daredevil has its work cut out for it: Wilson Fisk remains seated as New York mayor with Typhoid Mary, the Owl, Hammerhead and other deadly villains at his disposal – and that’s before Knull, the terrifying king in black, do not plunge the world into darkness! Elektra may be passed for the first time in her life – as Matt must find the strength to continue the fight as all hell breaks loose in prison! DAREDEVIL Collection (2019) # 26-32.

What I am saying: He is one of those “legendary” daredevil tracks, which is pretty amazing considering the number of legendary tracks associated with this character. ElektraDiable? Yes please.

The editor says: A giant leap for mutants! The new nation of Krakoa quickly became a major force on the world stage, but why stop there? The X-Men have re-launched the Sentient World Observation & Response Directorate, a fully independent organization dealing with all things alien on behalf of Earth. And SWORD is plunged into the heart of a planetary crisis as Krakoa fights the invader King in Black! Meanwhile, Abigail Brand prepares a failed operation on her own. What is Protocol V, and can Earth survive it? Then, walk a mile in Manifold’s shoes as the quintician of SWORD sets out on a journey through the universe – and comes face to face with a deadly enemy! And as the Silent Council discusses the rules for the murder in Krakoa, in space, the killings have already begun. SWORD Gathering (2020) # 1-5.

What I am saying: There have been a lot of gems in this current X-Verse and SWORD is just such a series. Al Ewing’s take on Abigail Brand’s operations is top notch and is that great cosmic conduit for the X-Line that everyone wants and needs.

… And with that, I’m calling this week over. Happy reading, comic book fans!
