PENDING TRADE # 4: Week of September 29, 2021

Graphic novels. Collective editions. Omnibus. Trades. These are really just words for “awesome way to read comics”. So with this column, we’re going to take a look at all of those hardcover pages hitting comic book stores, bookstores, and online outlets this week! (Note that in some cases the release dates at comic book stores, online retailers, and bookstores are different)

The editor says: In this charming and colorful LGBT + graphic novel first published as a webcomic, a fairy godfather and a beast man together raise a human baby. A human child abandoned in the woods is discovered by an unlikely couple: Razzmatazz, a fairy godfather, and Bon, a beast man. After arguing over how best to handle the child, they finally agree to co-parenting in the human world – for now, at least. What the two men don’t expect is that this little arrangement will push them to discover more about themselves… and more about each other, which could lead to love. In this charming LGBT + romantic comedy, a “temporary” magical family may well come true!

What I am saying: ROMCOM ALERT! Starting off as a webcomic, Life of Melody is now in print and ready for you to enjoy! The ridiculous idea that comics aren’t for everyone is exemplified by delicious LGBT + romcom comics like this!

The editor says: PORNSAK writer PICHETSHOTE’s long-awaited sequel to the critically acclaimed film INFIDEL with stunning art by ALEXANDRE TEFENKGI (OUTPOST ZERO)! After Edison Hark – a haunted and disgusting Chinese-American detective – on the trail of a killer in Chinatown in 1936, THE GOOD ASIAN is black Chinatown featuring the first generation of Americans to come of age under a ban. immigration, the Chinese, as they are besieged by rampant killings, abusive police officers and a world that seemingly never changes.

What I am saying: It’s the kind of black that conjures up the names “Brubaker” and “Phillips”, while also reminiscent of the unique infernal political landscape of 1936 Chinatown. That’s all you need to know.

The editor says: Can InvestiGators Mango and RoboBrash solve this latest mystery in the hilarious adventure series perfect for fans of Dog man ?!

InvestiGators’ New Mission Has Our Sewer Loving Secret Agents InvestiGators: ants in our PANTS, the latest chapter in John Patrick Green’s hilarious adventure series.

This high-tech replica has been programmed with all of Brash’s crime-fighting skills and know-how, but it looks like he has a few bugs in his system! Will Mango and his new partner be enough to stop the giant ants that are rampaging through the city? Orchestrated by the spaced villain, Maestronaut and Houdino, the artist of the dinosaur escape, it looks like the criminals are certainly increasing the ANT-y!

The editor says: With high-stakes action and a great imagination, Norgal and Agatha embark on a quest to find an invisible staircase to the heavens, atop which sits Mulgrid the Omniscient. With dark assassins everywhere, Norgal hopes Mulgrid’s help will get him over. Making their way through gorgonians, bombarding gargantuan spiders, and navigating the politics of a kingdom on the brink of collapse, the community must make teamwork a priority in order to survive.

What I am saying: Okay, volume 4 probably isn’t the best place to start a series, but Head Lopper should be on your radar. Andrew MacLean’s Wild Story went like a beast and it’s exactly the kind of story that only creator-owned comics can provide.

The editor says: Marie Curie’s exceptional life and groundbreaking research changed the world, expanding scientific understanding and creating new opportunities for women, as explored in this richly illustrated graphic biography endorsed by the Curie Estate.

Curie’s unique desire – against all odds – to understand the ways and laws of nature led to groundbreaking discoveries, which revolutionized medical theory and practice. She was the first female Nobel Prize winner and, to date, the only person to win a Nobel Prize in two categories; first in physics and later in chemistry.

Authorized by the Curie Estate, Marie Curie: A Quest For Light presents a special collaboration between author Frances Andreasen sterfelt, internationally renowned Danish astrophysicist Anja Cetti Andersen, and presents delightful illustrations by artist Anna Blaszczyk. Together, they made Curie’s fascinating story accessible to young readers.

What I am saying: Congratulations to everyone who took part in making this project happen, because presenting Marie Curie’s story to an audience of young readers is… well, it’s just amazing work. Hell, young or old readers – you should know the amazing Marie Curie and what could be better than that?

The editor says: What could be more frightening: fighting demons or letting your children down? That’s what a group of parents will find out as their plans to solve the school’s long-standing mystery lead to one parenting nightmare after another!

TASKLIST: drop children off at kindergarten; Have coffee with other parents; Go on a ghost hunt in the woods; Fight against a demonic entity; Collect children; Nap time.

As the kids go on an excursion, a group of parents disrupt an ancient evil buried under the old church hall, uncovering a decades-old mystery about a missing child and inviting something… hungry into their lives. Suddenly their mornings switch from play dates and peanut allergies to a battle for the souls of a broken family – and a child in particular – in this quirky story that combines the heights of parenthood with the fears of horror films.

What I am saying: While that sounds like everyday life for most parents (fighting a demonic entity, carpooling, etc.), talented Nick Roche is bringing demons to the suburbs and I’m good to go.

The editor says: Swipe right, Captain Marvel! Devastated by her breakup with Rhodey, Carol can’t find her rhythm. Of course, monsters always get punched, but things are also missed – and boy is she cranky. Before Carol can drive her friends crazy, they stage an intervention that looks a lot like speed dating. With friends like these, who needs enemies ?! But forget the romance – Captain Marvel is much more at home on the battlefield. She is a born soldier. Give her an enemy to fight, and she is unstoppable. But his Achilles heel is about to crack. The mystical arts are Carol’s only real weakness, and – haunted by her inability to stop evil Ove – she sets out on a mission to correct that weakness… at all costs! Invited with Doctor Strange! CAPTAIN MARVEL Collection (2019) # 27-30.

What I am saying: This most recent Captain Marvel run, written by Kelly Thompson, is as good as this character has ever seen – and I say that with colossal respect for several other Captain Marvel runs. Carol remains a leading character with a top-notch creative team that pushes her stories higher, further, faster.

… And with that, I’m calling this week over. Happy reading, comic book fans!
