Proteus Festival Returns to Z in Downtown VB

Zeiders American Dream Theater (The Z) at Virginia Beach Town Center is bringing back its flagship Proteus Festival this fall, celebrating the talents and treasures of the local arts scene.

New Plays Festival, Sept. 30-Oct. Oct. 1 & 6-7 at 7 p.m.

Theater lovers can play a part in selecting the audience’s favorite winner of the New Plays Festival 2022, with four new scripts performed in the repertoire. New works written in the American Dreamwrights Workshop are performed live on the theater studio stage, where audiences will rate their favorite shows to choose the winner. The audience favorite of 2022 will get an extended run of 2 weekends at Z in November.

Proteus Music Competition, October 8 at 8 p.m.

Local musicians perform in the Proteus Music Contest, featuring up-and-coming artists from 757. Five finalists, including the audience favorite selected by a community vote, compete in a live concert competition to be crowned the winner by a panel of music industry professionals. The grand prize winner will be featured in a headlining concert on the Live at The Z music series and will receive a recording package at The Recording Studio Z.

Creative teams, community performances

Artists of all kinds can take the stage at Proteus 2022 as part of the Creative Teams competition. Teams work together to create an all-new piece of film, music, or theatrical art based on a prompt, and will perform their new creation on the Z’s main stage. In the past, teams from local community theatres, groups and other artistic groups took part. There’s still time to form a team and create new art objects!

Plan B Comedy will present improvisation, sketches and more at Plan B Comedy Hullabaloo on October 7

Proteus Block Party, October 8 from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m., FREE

Rounding out the event, the Proteus Block Party is a free community event that celebrates the arts with a variety of experiences, performances, and activities for all ages. Comedy, children’s theater and musical performances will take place on the outdoor stage, and an open-mic slate sampler will perform musical theatre, spoken word and acoustic songs.

A new VA is for Lovers sign will be created at the Proteus Block Party with local artist Renee Calway.

The Z is bringing its own Virginia is for Lovers Love sign to the block party, complete with an interactive art project curated by local artist Renee Calway. The sign will be displayed in downtown Virginia Beach when completed.
