Ashburton Art Gallery and Museum Director Shirin Khosraviani helps prepare the gallery space for the 58th Annual Ashburton Society of Arts…

The Ashburton Art Gallery and Museum prepares for one of its busiest times of the year, when it hosts the annual exhibition of the Ashburton Society of Arts.

Registrations started rolling in last weekend and staff have been busy working on exhibits and helping artists organize their work. The winners of the various categories will be announced during a special opening night on Monday July 4th.

This is the company’s 58th annual exhibition and will be open to the public daily from Tuesday, July 5 through Friday, July 29.

There are 11 awards for art and sculpture, three for applied art, crafts and photography, and one for miniatures. There is also a public prize.

The gallery traditionally registers its highest number of visitors during the exhibition, which presents around 200 works also available for purchase.

The visual feast is provided by local, national and guest artists in a variety of media, and commissions from sales help run the company’s Short Street studio.

Members of the society will be present at the gallery daily throughout the exhibition, so this is a great opportunity to visit and learn more about one of Ashburton’s oldest arts organizations.

The society was formed in 1964, with the philosophy of encouraging the study, practice and creativity of the visual arts.
