The State Council for Educational Research and Training (SCERT) collaborated with Dr. Shakuntala Misra National Rehabilitation University and teachers from the university’s hearing loss department developed sign language content for primary school textbooks.

With audio-visual content that will be supported by sign language and subtitles, visually and hearing impaired students in public primary schools will greatly benefit.

SCERT Co-Director Ajay Kumar Singh said, “SCERT has created a YouTube channel named ‘Pragyaapti’ to help deaf and dumb children in their studies. In this channel, videos of course materials are being prepared and made available. Even normal children can use it.

“We also promote an inclusive education in which all children in the class can also be taught simultaneously through this electronic content. His trial has begun.

Mrutyunjaya Mishra, Head of Hearing Impairment Department at Dr. Shakuntala Misra National Rehabilitation University, said, “Work is underway to prepare electronic content for all subjects for these children. A start has been made with content being prepared for primary grades (1 to 5).

Singh said a number of videos have been created and uploaded to “Pragyaapti”. The video also has a running bar, which can be read and understood. At the same time, even a normal child watching the video will be able to understand by seeing it.

“These lesson videos can also be shown in class. It is therefore not necessary to sit separately for normal and deaf children. Suggestions and feedback were also solicited from teachers,” he said.
